“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
One night stands. Pornography and cybersex. Affairs, voyeurism and masturbation.
Inappropriate sexual behavior can take many forms. As we cross from healthy intimacy to an all consuming, obsessive and compulsive behavior, however, it becomes time to seek professional help.
But what does this behavior look like in the day to day?
An inability to control acting out our thoughts and behaviors or becoming preoccupied with them to the point that it affects relationships or work, potentially even creating trouble with law enforcement, are all signs of the circular issue known as Sex addiction. The guilt and shame of this addiction serve only to feed our inappropriate behavior. Addicts withdraw, isolating themselves and turning back to the very vice that created the undesired emotions.
This is where the Men’s Sexual Addiction Recovery Group comes in.
A Christian recovery program designed to help men fulfill God’s plan for them, the group is based on Biblical principles and the ground breaking curriculum of Dr. Patrick Carnes, the leading authority in the world on sexual addiction recovery. Participants walk through Dr. Carnes’ 30-task model and the principles of the 12 Steps, guided by his workbook, Facing the Shadow, and his companion workbook, Shadows of the Cross. While the workbook focuses on the therapeutic work of the withdrawal stage, the companion book seeks to establish the Christian basis for all the therapeutic work.
Gene Gallagher, a pastoral counselor who has led groups like this for over a decade, guides group participants through the process and provides a safe atmosphere for them. This atmosphere enables clients to drop their masks and become vulnerable, working through the shame and fear that drives their addiction. Throughout the 9 to 12 months of addiction withdrawal, the program, Gene and fellow participants maintain this atmosphere, standing by clients as they work through the pain.
The Men’s Sexual Addiction Recovery Group strives to provide our clients a structured program that is measurable and task oriented. In addition to helping clients understand Reality and learning how to cope with its challenges, we build new life practices that instill safety, vulnerability and relationship intimacy. Learning to understand where the addiction stems from, members discover how to treat it and how to find support in others.
